Piešťany lies on the Váh river in western Slovakia, where hot sulphurous springs rise on and around a river island. The spa developed under the Erdődy family from the 18th century and expanded into the Napoleonic Baths and, in 1912, the Thermia Palace with its Irma bathhouse.

Why visit

The signature treatment is the local sulphurous mud, applied hot; the "Broken Crutch" statue at the bridge is the town's own summary of its reputation. The spa island remains a coherent piece of spa architecture and parkland.
