Hajdúszoboszló's thermal water was struck in 1925 during an exploratory drilling for oil and gas; the first bath opened two years later. The resort grew into Hungarospa, a sprawling complex of thermal, medicinal, aqua-park and beach pools on the edge of the Great Hungarian Plain.

The water here is unusual even by Hungarian standards: deeply coloured, saline, and rich in iodine and bromine, long prescribed for joint and rheumatic complaints. The scale is part of the experience — quiet medicinal pools sit minutes from open-air summer basins.
