The springs at Bath, West Virginia — universally called Berkeley Springs — were used by Native peoples and then by colonial visitors including George Washington, who bathed here in 1748. The town was chartered as a spa in 1776, and the springs now sit inside a small state park with Roman-style bathhouse tubs and an outdoor pool.

The water is warm rather than hot, and the appeal is historical: a public spring, a stone tub said to be Washington's bath, and an American spa town that never became grand.
