The Balneario de Mondariz lies on the river Tea in inland Galicia, in a village that exists because of its springs. Bicarbonate-sodium mineral water from the Gándara and Troncoso sources is used for drinking cures and heated for the bathing circuits.

Why visit

Mondariz is a rare example of a purpose-built spa village: a granite drinking pavilion, a river-side park and a spa hotel on the site of the Belle Époque Gran Hotel.

History

The springs were declared of public utility in 1873, and the Peinador brothers developed a grand hotel that drew Spanish and Portuguese society before it burned in 1973; the spa was rebuilt in the following decades.

The mineral water is naturally cool and is heated for the thermal circuit; drinking the water at the Gándara fountain is free and part of the local ritual.
