Bagni di Lucca's hot springs, used in the Middle Ages and formalised under Napoleonic rule, made it a fashionable nineteenth-century resort for the English Romantics and for Europe's exiles. Hot water at around 54 °C still feeds the historic bath house and a natural steam grotto cut into the rock.
