On the northern edge of Singapore, a single natural hot spring rises in what is now a small NParks park. The water is led into a four-tier cascade so it cools as it descends: visitors collect it in buckets, soak their feet at the lower tiers, and — a long-standing local habit — cook eggs at the hottest one.

Why visit

It is the only natural hot spring on Singapore's main island and one of the city's most unselfconscious public rituals, free and used almost entirely by locals.

Character: Water rises at around 70°C and is stepped through a four-tier cascade so it cools enough for foot soaking at the lower levels.

History

The spring was discovered on a pineapple plantation in 1909 and its water was later bottled commercially. The site sat within a military base for decades, with informal bathing continuing at a standpipe, before the land was returned and the present park, designed around the cascade, opened in January 2020.

Practical information

Free and open daily from early morning; there is no immersion bathing — only foot soaking and buckets. Water at the top tier is hot enough to scald, so use the cooler lower tiers.
