Noboribetsu Onsen sits at the edge of Jigokudani, "Hell Valley", a volcanic crater in Shikotsu-Tōya National Park whose vents and streams supply the town's bathhouses. Several distinct water types — sulphur, iron, alum, salt — surface within walking distance of each other.

Bathing here comes with the landscape that produces it: boardwalks cross the steaming crater floor to Ōyunuma, a hot lake, and a natural footbath in the forest below. Most large hotels open their baths to day visitors.
