Jiaoxi is a hot-spring town on Taiwan's north-eastern Yilan plain. Its water is a sodium bicarbonate spring — clear, odourless and famously soft — piped to hotels, public bath houses and the free foot baths of Tangweigou Hot Spring Park in the town centre.

Why visit
Most Taiwanese springs are sulphurous or muddy; Jiaoxi's is neither, and the town's streamside park makes bathing an ordinary public act rather than a resort purchase.

History
The springs were developed during the Japanese colonial period and the town grew rapidly as a spa destination after the Hsuehshan Tunnel opened road access from Taipei in 2006.
Practical information
The foot baths in Tangweigou Park are free; full bathing is at the public bath house and hotels nearby.

About fifty minutes by road from Taipei through the Hsuehshan Tunnel, or by train to Jiaoxi Station.
