Băile Tușnad

Romania's smallest town: carbonated springs and mofettes in the Olt gorge.

Băile Tușnad sits in the wooded Olt gorge in Székely Land, where volcanic activity feeds cold carbonated springs and mofettes — dry vents of carbon-dioxide gas used for cardiovascular therapy. Warmed mineral pools, gas baths and mountain air have been the resort's prescription since the mid-nineteenth century.

Practical information

Trains on the Braşov–Miercurea Ciuc line stop in town; hotels operate their own pools and mofette rooms. Gas chambers have strict time limits, and children are usually excluded.
