Ginzan Onsen lies in the mountains of Obanazawa, Yamagata Prefecture, on the site of a silver mine that gave the valley its name. Hot springs were developed after the mine declined, and the three- and four-storey wooden inns that face each other across the Ginzan river date largely from the Taishō and early Shōwa periods.

The setting is the attraction: gas lamps light the riverbanks at dusk, snow banks up to the balconies in winter, and public footbaths and two small communal bathhouses are open to visitors who are not staying overnight.
