Caldas da Rainha takes its name from Queen Leonor, who in 1485 endowed a thermal hospital over the sulphurous springs she had found in use by local people. The Hospital Termal Rainha D. Leonor claims descent from that foundation and still operates as a treatment spa, its water directed at respiratory and rheumatic conditions rather than leisure bathing.
