Bear Lake formed in the nineteenth century when rainwater dissolved the salt massif at Sovata. Fresh water floating over dense brine traps solar heat, so the lake warms in stratified layers through summer, with the strongest gradients a little below the surface. Bathing is seasonal, in wooden bathing enclosures around the shore.
