Ciater sits below the Tangkuban Perahu volcano in the highlands of West Java, surrounded by tea plantations. Water carrying the volcano's sulphur arrives hot and milky, and is stepped through a series of large open pools and small private baths, cooling as it goes; the smell of sulphur hangs over the whole valley.

Storia

The springs, long used by villagers in Ciater, were developed into the Sari Ater resort from the late 1960s as Bandung's weekend hill retreat, expanding over the decades into pools, gardens and accommodation.

Informazioni pratiche

Very busy at weekends and Indonesian holidays; the hotter upper pools and private baths cost more than the general pools. Sulphur will tarnish silver jewellery.
