Mariánské Lázně grew in the early nineteenth century around an extraordinary concentration of cold mineral springs — over a hundred within the town and its woods. Its cast-iron colonnade of 1889 and the Singing Fountain are the centre of a cure built on drinking, gas baths and mud, in a valley of forested slopes and Belle Époque hotels.
