Cauterets built its reputation on strongly sulphurous mountain springs that attracted writers and royalty in the nineteenth century — Victor Hugo and George Sand among them. Les Bains du Rocher, opened in 2011, works the same water into indoor and outdoor pools cut into the rock above the town.

The outdoor pool faces straight into the mountains of the Pyrenees National Park, with the Pont d'Espagne and its waterfalls a short drive up the valley.
